He is currently snoring on my chest in the Moby wrap. Riley and I went for a walk tonight since it was still beautiful out. I'm not looking forward to winter being cold and wet and less outdoor friendly, so we took advantage of the last day of Summer.<br />
<br />
Graham is looking to have a milk allergy. I'm not excited about this. I'm going to try to get milk out of my diet and see if that helps him. He pukes a lot and now is starting to get a rash on his face and neck. I originally thought it was from moisture as he will often puke at night and not fuss or wake up so he has a wet bib on for multiple hours when asleep. But today, after he had some formula for the first time, it seemed to be worse. I love my nonfat caramel macchiatos. (I was just going to go into how soy milk adds points to my drink, and pulled up the nutrition facts only to find that a Grande with soy milk is 6 points, as opposed to 5 points for one with Nonfat milk. A Tall is only one point less for both soy and nonfat milk.) So I suppose I will try soy milk and see if I like it. I will try to go milk free for 2 weeks and see if it makes any difference in his puking and his rash. I really hope it isn't the case. Because I love ice cream. ;)<br />
<br />
He is really starting to get interactive. He smiles here and there and has said some "goos." But mostly he screams and cries. ;) He seems to think that if he is awake he should be eating, and he will let you know if he doesn't get fed when he wakes up. :) He can be soothed, but he seems to do better with me soothing him. Thankfully, he takes a pacifier <i>most</i> of the time. But there is a point of no return: if he gets mad enough he will not take the pacifier, and will get even more mad at you if you keep trying. Needless to say, he does cry quite a lot as I have another little boy to feed and clothe and entertain. Each day there seems to be a bit more time where he will just be awake looking around, kicking and working on his karate chop. But it is still pretty fleeting.<br />
<br />
Yesterday he weighed in at 9 pounds 4.5 ounces. (And I just looked and that is EXACTLY what Riley weighed at 6 weeks. Crazy!) He is gaining, but slowly. I am okay with this, because I like having a little baby for as long as possible. He is still in newborn size diapers, but will be moving up to size 1 here soon. Today I put him in a 3 months outfit (because all of the newborn ones need washed, as I only have about 5) and he almost fits. It is still big on him though.<br />
<br />
Riley is really starting to be a big help around the house. He will bring me things (if he knows where it is) when I ask, and can entertain himself without a problem. A couple nights ago at bedtime Graham was screaming because he was hungry, but I needed to set him down to pick up a few things in Riley's room. So I propped him up in Riley's bed. Riley thought this was the best idea, jumped in bed and slid right up to Graham with his head on his bear (which he uses as a pillow) and told me to put his blankets on him. I put the blanket on Riley only and he said "No, mommy. On him too." So I put the blankets on them both. Then Riley said "Goodnight Mommy!" With Graham screaming next to him. :) Such a silly man. He was okay with me taking Graham with me though and did not throw a fit. (Which, with a toddler is completely possible.)<br />
<br />
Riley gives Baby Brother kisses, eskimos and hugs whenever he thinks to. Which often means when he is asleep. Riley cannot wait to play with his brother. I'm hoping this attitude doesn't change much, though I realize that they will fight regardless of how well they get along. It is inevitable.<br />
<br />
Riley is talking up a storm. He cracks me up every day. Some of the things he says are priceless. He is starting to have fights with himself, or rather his hands will talk to each other and disagree. "Are you dancing? No! I'm not." His hands have said to each other. And on and on he goes. He can count to 10, sometimes starting at 1, but other times starting at 5. :) We are working on colors now, but he seems to be slow with this. Who knows, maybe he is color blind. Or perhaps it isn't important to him right now. :)<br />
<br />
Well, this is all I have for now. My weight loss journey is continuing. And so far is going well. I'll post more on this later. :) Maybe...Nurse Neaglehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06422422838473085745noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7576289851003404827.post-91094188888264562302013-09-05T23:56:00.001-07:002013-09-05T23:56:20.014-07:00A day on planAnother post related to my Weight Watchers journey. Today I can say that I successfully stayed within my Daily Points. Yesterday I did not. But that is why we have those extra weekly points available, right?! Today I tracked most of my meals before I ate. This led to me having to change my tracking, because I didn't finish my tuna sandwich at lunch time. I only ate half of it. One of my problems is that I tend to eat until the food is gone, instead of until I am satisfied. I am making an effort to listen to my body instead of mindlessly eating.<br />
<br />
Because I had only used 10 of my points for breakfast and lunch (and I've given myself 43 points per day) I relaxed a bit for dinner at Azteca with my parents. I tracked afterwards for that, but I tried to keep track in my head of all that I ate. The scale will tell me how I did next week. It felt good to be in control today. Though I must admit I felt really hungry for some of the morning. I set some carrots out on the counter for me to nibble on during those times when I felt bored and ready to eat again. Which really helped.<br />
<br />
For dessert tonight Riley and I shared a WW Chocolate smoothie blended with 2% milk, ice and a frozen banana. I've been collecting bananas for a while, mostly to make banana bread, but decided that I wanted to try it in a smoothie tonight. It was good. Albeit a little mild. I had to add water, since the ice and frozen banana made it really thick, so next time I think I'll add about half as much ice. We'll see. But it was only 3 points for a grande size smoothie. (Riley had a tall, and there is another "tall" amount in my freezer now for another day.) Could have been less points if I had 1% or nonfat milk, but Riley is drinking 2% and is the main milk drinker in the house.<br />
<br />
Riley and I love making and enjoying smoothies. :) And with fruit and veggies being 0 points, I can have a pretty satisfying smoothie for very few points. Looking forward to more in the future! :)<br />

I was a little disappointed, because my home scale read 3-4 pounds lighter, but I dealt with it. It is my starting point. It is my kick-start to get losing.<br />
<br />
Graham will be 4 weeks tomorrow. And I have 24 pounds to lose. That's about 1.5 pounds a week if I do it as quickly as before. Full disclosure: I raised my goal weight by a few pounds, because I was finding it difficult to maintain the original weight I picked before I got pregnant. I only raised it by 3 pounds, because I would rather be happy and healthy, than stressed and healthy. :P And hey, if I'm able to lose more and maintain it this time, I'll go for that too. :)<br />
<br />
But honestly, I'm really not ready to start this weight loss journey. Junk food tastes good! Sweets make me happy. Celebrations are on their way! Halloween. Thanksgiving. Riley's 3rd birthday! Christmas. Plus Fall brings so many comfort foods and baked goods. And I love baking.<br />
<br />
I told myself I would not find myself right back here, but here I am again. I went back and read all my posts related to weight loss, and wouldn't you know, the same themes and feelings are current in my life now. The first one is <a href="http://toward-the-horizon.blogspot.com/2011/10/new-start.html">here</a>.<br />
<br />
Here I am post baby #2 and I'm not happy with my outward appearance. I look at myself in the mirror and I'm disgusted. I do not feel attractive, naked or clothed. I fear it will have some affect on the already strained relationship with my husband. So you would think that my motivation would be there. That I would be driven to lose, and yet the opposite is true. I'm clinging to food like it is a long lost friend. (After having gestational diabetes yet again, in some ways food <i>is</i> a long lost friend.) But I know that I should not use food as an outlet for my emotions; as a blanket to comfort me. I know. I have been here before. I know the journey. I know the program works. I know I'll feel and look amazing once the weight is off. But it seems like an eternity away. And homemade Oreo ice cream tastes good in the here and now.<br />
<br />
In many ways I'm nervous that the weight won't come off like it did before. I'm also scared that the flabby belly I'm carrying around with me won't shrink back down. Why didn't I take pictures of my body after I lost the weight before? (I <i>know</i> why I didn't take before pictures, but now I wish I had them. Because I'm sure my body looks similar now, but I don't <i>remember </i>it ever being this bad.)<br />
<br />
And then I need to remember that when I joined Weight Watchers, Riley was 9 months old. I had my fill of baked goods and fast food, and was tired of hoping the weight would fall off. I see it all the time on Facebook: <i>My baby is 6 weeks old and I'm back in my pre-pregnancy jeans!</i> or <i>After 2 months I can say I weigh less than I did before I got pregnant!</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
And perhaps these ladies only gained the 15-20 pounds that the books tell you is healthy. (Though I just looked it up and the Mayo Clinic says 25-35 pounds is healthy for a person of normal BMI before getting pregnant.) I didn't do as bad as I thought. But...full disclosure...I gained 45 extra pounds. My willpower is awfully weak. (And my first trimester nausea is not strong enough!) But, hey! I'm consistent. I gained 45 pounds with Riley as well. I told myself I wouldn't...and honestly I did do better this time with my food choices, but here I am. And I have digressed, but I really do have to think about un-friending, and or hiding the aforementioned lucky ladies. (Just so you know, it takes a lot of willpower for me to <i>not</i> use a curse word to describe them.) :) But seriously, they should be happy, but seeing their good fortune just makes me focus on how I am not as lucky.<br />
<br />
Where am I going with this?<br />
<br />
This is my honest post on my weight loss journey. My struggles. Because it is okay to have ups and downs with weight. Because it is okay for someone who made Lifetime status to struggle too. Because I am human too. And I <i>will</i> lose this weight.<br />
<br />
I went in today, despite not wanting to see that number on the scale, in order to hold myself accountable. I've been weighing myself at home and I have had some weight loss, but the last couple weeks I've been pretty stable. So I suppose it is time to get serious and start tracking. I mentioned before that I read over all of the weight loss posts that I shared before, and I found this (It was in a post after my first weight loss, I lost 1.6 pounds but was a little disappointed, expecting more of a loss.):<br />
<br />
"<i><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;">And then I sat down and the meeting was exactly what I needed to hear. The leader read a poem about a pound of fat. The message was that people tend to say "I only lost a pound." Or "it was </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;">just </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;">a pound." And saying things like that make it seem like it isn't an accomplishment. When really the weight will be lost one pound at a time. She then equated it to a puzzle, and how a person doesn't approach a puzzle thinking they will throw several pieces together at a time; instead a person approaches a puzzle with one piece at a time. Obviously I have truncated the message, but hopefully you get the idea." (You can find the post <a href="http://toward-the-horizon.blogspot.com/2011/10/loss.html">here</a>)</span></i><br />
<br />
So, here I go. One puzzle piece at a time.<br />
<br />

I had agreed to an induction, but was getting denied the opportunity to go into the hospital. They kept telling me to call in, and every time they would say, call back in a couple hours. It was mentally draining. I was struggling with the concept. I shed many, many tears. My sleep was interrupted on Wednesday, as they told me to call in at 6 am, 9 am, and 11 am. Finally, at 11 am they gave me a check in time of 1 pm. If they didn't call me before then.<br />
<br />
Finally relief! I showered, packed up our stuff, and we were on our way.<br />
<br />
The issue: the hospital went "live" with electronic charting and orders on the Saturday before, so everything in the hospital was slower than normal. (And, I assume, the staffing ratios were even more important to keep low, since the nurses had a lot of new stuff to watch out for.)<br />
<br />
We were checked into our room, and an hour later I received the first dose of cytotec, a pill. Cytotec is used to start labor by softening the cervix. After talking with the nurse about my first labor and delivery, she told me that Riley's birth was also an induction. I never considered that, since my water spontaneously broke. However, since contractions needed help to really get started, with cytotec, it was considered an induction.<br />
<br />
I was given my first dose at 2:45pm. It is given every 3 hours. I had to be monitored for 1 hour after taking it, but then was allowed to walk and leave the floor. It was nice to be able to walk around and feel like a normal person. Unfortunately, the cytotec didn't do much as far as changing my cervix. I was at 1-2cm when I arrived at the hospital, and after 2 doses, I was at a 2. My contractions were irregular, and mostly mild. At 11 pm the new night nurse came in to meet me. She said that the midwife was on her way in, and we would find out if I would be staying in the hospital or going home.<br />
<br />
I was not too excited to hear this. She said sometimes cytotec doesn't work, and mothers can go home for a couple days until labor starts. I was ready to put up a fight. Sure, my contractions weren't regular. But I wasn't always comfortable. How would I know to come back in?<br />
<br />
So, I was left to labor for a while as we waited for the midwife to come. It was 1245 before I saw my nurse again. I still hadn't seen a midwife, but my contractions were still there. Irregular, but there. My nurse tells me that the midwife says I get to stay. And she is going to start me on pitocin. So she had to start an IV.<br />
<br />
The first attempt was painful, and unfortunately she wasn't successful. I was praying that her second attempt would be a success, because I didn't want to go all "nurse" on her. The cannulas they use feel like they are as big as a drinking straw, I swear! The second IV was just as painful, but it was a success. So, she started up the pitocin. I was a bit nervous. Pitocin makes the contractions more regular, but they are unnatural. Now, I was supposed to stay on the monitor, which meant I was supposed to stay in bed. The contractions really started picking up. For me at least. They were quite painful. All I wanted to do was get up and move. My nurse, when she was in there, was very helpful in telling me to let the contractions be. My gut reaction was to tighten and fight the contractions. I felt like I had to go to the bathroom every 30 minutes or so, so I would walk the short distance to the bathroom.<br />
<br />
I had the typical bowel movement, and I began realizing I was starting labor. But I was trying to be quiet about it. I felt like the monitor was showing mild contractions, and if I was whining about them I was just being a baby. So I tried to be as quiet and stoic about them as possible.<br />
<br />
But eventually I wore down. I was snappy at my mom at times, which was a completely different experience from when I was laboring with Riley. With Riley I pretty much asked for the epidural once contractions started, so the rest of my labor I was comfortable and a little medicated.<br />
<br />
My mother-in-law had a flight to catch. She had delayed it when we though I was going in on Tuesday, thinking she would get to meet the baby, then leave the following day. But now it was looking as if she wouldn't get to meet him after all. She had a car coming to pick her up at our house at 5:30am. Just before 4:00am, she decides she needs to leave. So she and Jamaal leave to go get her car. It was while they were gone that I asked my nurse: "What do I need to be to get an epidural?" She said at least 4cm dilated. She went to get the midwife, to see if she wanted to be the one to check me. So, I went to the bathroom. Sitting on the toilet I chanted: Please be a 4! Please be a 4! I was ready to relax.<br />
<br />
The nurse came back 10 minutes later (which felt like an eternity) saying that the midwife was in a delivery, so she would be the one to check me. I was at a 5 or a 6, and my bag of water was bulging. Whew! "Epidural it up!" I said. But first she had to run a bolus of fluid in. And she increased the rate of the IV fluids. Time seemed to stop. It was 4:00am at this point. Jamaal got back in the room around 4:20. They sent my mom out of the room saying that only one family member could be there while the epidural was being placed.<br />
<br />
At around 4:30 or so people started coming in to get the room ready. And they set me up on the side of the bed. The anesthesiologist came in the room and immediately went on the computer. He started asking me questions, but at this point my contractions were bad enough that I really could not talk through them. And they seemed to be on top of each other, so I was having a rough time answering. I was very irritated with the guy, but didn't want to be mean to him because he had the drugs.<br />
<br />
Finally they got me positioned, and he started prepping me. At 4:45am a lot of things happened. He had the epidural needle in my back and I said "Uh oh." Everyone in the room stopped. For a second it was silent. They asked me what was wrong and my water broke. The reason I said "uh oh" was I had an overwhelming desire to push. So much so that I really could not fight it. My eyes were huge as I looked to my nurse who was helping me to stay in position. She calmed me down, told me to make small grunts if I had to push, but that was impossible. It was like putting a starving person in front of a buffet and telling them to not eat. I was panicked. My worst fear realized: having no pain relief for the delivery. The anesthesiologist started to speed things up. He got the catheter in, and gave me a bolus of numbing medicine and some fentanyl. I felt some relief. But I still felt like pushing. It was then that my nurse told me that once he was done, we would swing my legs over onto the bed, and start pushing. You're going to have a baby, they kept saying but I was still worried. How the heck was I going to make it through this!?<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, my mom was out in the waiting area. When my water broke, there was quite a commotion. I believe that is when the midwife got in the room, and people started breaking the bed down. She heard the noise and got back to my room as quick as she could. Someone at the door stopped her from coming in. Asked her who she was, (she responded with "Mom") And they asked Jamaal if "mom" could come in, and he said yes. I was too busy trying (unsuccessfully) to keep from pushing.<br />
<br />
And my nurse was right. The nurses helped me swing my legs back on the bed, and the midwife checked be and confirmed that I was ready to push. I want to say I pushed for a total of 5 contractions. In between one of them I said "Riley is my favorite." :) I was joking of course, but this delivery for sure hurt worse than Riley's. The midwife was very helpful, and my nurse was right there talking me through it. At 5:13am Graham Edwin Neagle was born. He cried immediately. And apparently had his hand at his face, so the midwife is certain he would have been out sooner if he had his arms at his sides.<br />
<br />
I didn't tear or need stitches, which was a relief. The midwife and I introduce ourselves to each other. She had come in the room to meet me, little did she know she would be delivering my baby first. :) He was, and is, perfect.<br />

I knew I was being optimistic imagining my water breaking at 38 weeks, yet again. My midwife called me last weekend, because she realized we hadn't talked about induction, and she was not going to be the one to see me at my next appointment. It was weird to get her call. But I refused. No induction for me. Don't you know what an induction means? More pain. More monitoring. More expectations, in less time. Equaling a higher chance of cesarean. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Besides, it doesn't matter. I'm going to have this baby <i>tomorrow</i>. I've been having contractions. Sometimes to the point where I figure I will be woken up in lots of pain, and have to throw everything in the car. Call someone to either come over and sleep so Riley can be left in his bed. Or stow him away in his car seat and have someone take him away for us. Children really make this whole labor thing a bit more complicated. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But a week went by and my cervix didn't change. And then I realized I was almost full term. Being gestational diabetic, I knew they were going to force me to be induced if I didn't agree to it anyway. And I started to realize I was <i>tired</i> of this whole situation. My ankles are huge. We're talking the size of grapefruits. And my calves are just as big. You know they're big when people comment on the size of them. As if I don't already know. I can't cross my legs, sit on the floor, wash my feet, paint my toenails, or wear any shoes except for flip flops that I bought two sizes too big. I can't even go to the bathroom without underwear dents in my legs afterwards. In some respect, I've hoped for elevated blood pressures just so they would have to induce me. But I'm thankful that it is not. Pre-eclampsia is very dangerous for both baby and mom, and I really do not wish it on anyone. But sometimes, in desperation, I've had these thoughts. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Knowing that my midwife is on call on Tuesdays I called in this Monday to request an induction. They squeezed me in to be seen. The hospital requires a consent and a vaginal exam be done prior to scheduling anything. I was at about the same. Not much of a change. If any at all. They gave me an appointment at 7pm for the next day. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We took Riley to his first theater movie. We visited with family. I called at 5pm as instructed, and was told that they anticipate getting me in later that night, but to call again at 7:30pm. My parents came and got him for dinner, as they will keep him overnight for us. And I call as instructed, and they are having a hard time finding the charge nurse. Can they call me back? After waiting for about 15 minutes, they call me back and tell me that they are just too full. But they could call me in the middle of the night, if I wanted. Or I could call them at 6am. No joke I sat on the phone for 8 minutes thinking about what I wanted. The lady on the other end explained my options a couple times, probably to fill the awkward silence as I thought. I would have the opportunity to see <i>my midwife</i> if I went in tonight. But she is off at 7 am, and would likely not be the one delivering my baby anyway. And in this situation we would have interrupted sleep, or none at all as I would be waiting for the phone call, trying not to sleep too deeply. But calling in at 6am? My midwife won't see me at all. It will be someone unknown to me. I hope that it is someone nice. But it is a big let down to know that Jennifer will not be there. I really trust her. She is fun and friendly and reminds me a lot of my other midwife who delivered Riley. And then there is the thought that I still might not get a time. This type of waiting is much much worse. I was already anxious about being induced. And now that anxiety is just prolonged. I have appointments on Thursday, and at this point I anticipate going to them. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And finally, my mother-in-law postponed her work trip until Thursday so that she can be there for the birth. And now, I'm beginning to wonder if she will get to meet him or not. I have been a wreck ever since I got off the phone with the hospital. I went shopping this afternoon for some carbohydrates. I figured I would be craving them after the delivery, and would finally be able to eat whatever I desire. But again there is a delay. And then there is the heartburn that just won't go away. Ugh. I swear I never felt this <i>over </i>being pregnant with Riley. I guess that is what happens when you give birth a few weeks early. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I hope to have a happy post up on here in a couple days, but for now you will have to deal with my pity party for one. </div>

The other night I came to the realization that I have no idea what it will be like when labor starts. With Riley, my water broke. I didn't have contractions immediately prior. I was eating a bratwurst on the couch, preparing for a night shift of work, and thought I wet myself a little bit. Went to the bathroom and while I was washing my hands, I realized I was still leaking. From that moment on, it was a whirlwind. I have mentioned this to a few people and they all laugh at me and say "You'll know." But come on people, women get sent home everyday for false labor. I don't want that to be me!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This upcoming Saturday marks the longest I've ever been pregnant. This is difficult for me to deal with. I've been ready to go for weeks. Last week I was having pretty obnoxious contractions. They weren't horribly painful, but they were uncomfortable. But this week I'm having hardly any. Makes me think this baby just doesn't want to come out. My midwife has "threatened" induction if I don't go on my own. With gestational diabetes they get nervous that the baby will get too big. So I am a bit paranoid. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
My mom is out of town until late Sunday or Monday. So it would be ideal for her if he were to wait until then. I'm scheduled to work Sunday thru Tuesday this week for my last shifts at work, and I really dread it. I think I'll go in on Sunday but call it quits for Monday and Tuesday. We'll see though. I really don't want to "waste" my time off without a little newborn. Because that just means he will be even younger when I return. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This heat has caught up with me. Today was the first time I was really uncomfortable. I had to run to Target to get an air pump so we could set up the pool. Then the hose water was so cold that I could only stand in it with the water to my mid-calf. It was painful at first, but felt so good after a few minutes. It helped to cool me down. Riley, was not impressed though. He put a toe in, then lifted his legs up saying "up! up!" (I was holding him). He wanted to play in it, but didn't want to get cold. So tomorrow should be better for us. It won't be quite so cold. Just watch it be 65 degrees tomorrow. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm having lots of dreams of sweets and carbs. Pies. Cakes. Candy. Ice cream. I want everything. Anything. I can have small amounts of them, but for the most part I stay away. I found that Balance Bar has a Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough protein bar that fills my "candy" craving and doesn't mess my sugars up. I've gone through 3 boxes already. (they have 6 in a box) To be fair, Riley has helped a little. But for the most part, I try to hide that I'm eating them from him. They are too good to share! :) </div>

I remember now, all of those thoughts I had shoved into the deep dark corners of my mind. The difficult, trying times I had when pregnant before, that I forced myself to forget about. There's something about a beautiful, warm, wiggly infant that makes you forget everything terrible that happened when he was forming in the womb. I was incredibly hopeful that I might not be diagnosed with GD this time though.<br />
<br />
And, okay, my blood sugars are pretty well controlled. I was just barely diagnosed this time. (Meaning I only had one elevated blood sugar during the 2-hour test and it was only a smidge over, but it only takes one elevated blood sugar to diagnose a lady.)<br />
<br />
I am better now, at keeping myself satisfied. The first go around I had no understanding of protein. It was difficult for me because my diet before I got pregnant consisted mostly of carbohydrates. This time, my diet was more well rounded. That being said, I still wish I could have a pan of brownies on my stove without worrying that I won't be able to stay away from them. Last night, Riley saw a box that holds a cupcake display on my kitchen table (I borrowed it from my mom for Riley's birthday and haven't returned it yet...) It has pictures of different types of cupcakes being displayed and he said "Cars cupcakes in there?" But cupcakes really comes out something like "cuh-kays." He remembered his birthday cupcakes that had McQueen and Mater on them. Then he really badly wanted to make some. And so did I. But I knew that if I made a bunch of cupcakes, I would also want to eat a bunch of cupcakes, and it is better that I don't right now.<br />
<br />
It is kind of funny to me, in a sick way. When I was on Weight Watchers, I could have "dangerous" things in my house. I could make brownies for my husband. I could have made cupcakes for Riley. And I might have had some, but I would have stopped at one. And might not even be tempted, depending on how many points I had available. Whereas now, I don't think I could resist. It is what I crave the most, and my will power is wearing thin. The difference is right now what I eat doesn't just affect me. It also will affect this little wiggly baby. I do not want him to be a huge newborn, and keeping my sugars in control will help that. But also I don't want to have to stay longer in the hospital if his blood sugars won't regulate. And I don't want them to make me supplement if I can help it.<br />
<br />
I'm planning my first meals right now, though they might change later on down the road. You better believe a milk shake is one of the first things on my list.<br />
<br />
That being said, I'm finding out that sometimes carbs aren't really necessary: I had a lettuce wrapped burger the other day that was really quite tasty! So I was able to have onion rings with it, since I didn't waste my carbohydrates on the bun. It was one of the most satisfying "out to eat" moments I've had. I didn't feel like I was missing out.<br />
<br />
The education I got this time was helpful in some ways, but the nurse does not teach carb counting (as I was taught the last time). Instead she tells me I have certain times of the day when I can have certain food groups. I was appalled when she basically told me I could have fruit with dinner, and with a bedtime snack that also had some protein. I'm sorry, but fruit is a big saving grace for me. I need the sweetness to keep me away from brownies and cupcakes and chocolate. And so, I've pretty much taken from her teachings what I want, and count carbs like I have done in the past. One thing she mentioned to me, and I have found to be true, is: if you eat only carbs at bedtime, the fasting blood sugar in the morning will be higher. And this is because as you sleep, your body freaks out because your easy access food supply is burned off rather quickly. So your liver will dump out some sugars to make sure your brain and heart get the sugars they need to function. The problem is, the liver dumps too much, causing elevated fasting blood sugars. However, if you add some protein, the body has to take longer to process it, so the liver doesn't get the message to dump sugars.<br />
<br />
Another little thing she told me, was carbs are best eaten 4-5 hours after waking. This is because the body just slowed down all of its processes for sleep, and it takes a while for it to wake up again to process the food we eat. What this boils down to is I cannot tolerate oatmeal in the morning. I have tried twice, and both times my blood sugars have been on the higher side. It is really sad, because I love my oatmeal. And so does little Riley. :) But Adams peanut butter on two slices of low calorie bread with some sliced strawberries on top is really hitting the spot in the morning. I found some Greek yogurt with only 9 carbs in it that really satisfies, so I'll eat a cup of that as well.<br />
<br />
But there are really depressing, stomach growling moments where I really wish I could have some ice cream or other carbohydrate, and I long for time to pass more quickly. Tomorrow I will be 33 weeks. Only 5-7 more to go!<br />

~1~</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today I found out I had failed my 2-hour glucose test. (I had failed my 1-hour, so was ordered to take the 2-hour.) I haven't been told my values yet, so I'm not sure how badly I failed. But I'm guessing not that badly. We had decided, at least, that I wouldn't take the 2-hour test if I had failed the 1-hour by a lot. It is a disappointment, of course, to have Gestational Diabetes again. But I'm not as distraught about it as I was the first time around. I am supposed to meet with someone next week to go over my blood sugars and food log, and talk about what I need to do to keep my sugars in control. We'll see when that happens as I work in the early part of the week, so often don't get phone calls. Oh well. I know what I'm doing, mostly. This time around I only have my anniversary (next week!) and the 4th of July to make it through. Otherwise I don't have to suffer through Halloween, Thanksgiving and the possibility of Christmas like I did with Riley. (He was born before Christmas, so I was able to eat some carbs.) </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They will make me to Non-stress tests again and make me come in pretty frequently, so it is going to be tricky finding appropriate child care. I'm going to have issues I'm sure. But Riley cannot come with me to a Non-stress test. I would never be able to sit still with him there! :) </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
~2~</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Riley has been in his big boy bed for quite some time now. He, just last week, realized that he was able to get out of his bed in the morning. And oh how much Mommy and Daddy are sad about this! He used to sit in his bed, play with some toys for a while before yelling out "Mommmmmy!!" I would then get out of bed and go get him from his room. Mind you this would happen at 9:45 or 10:30. It was wonderful. But now he is getting up at 7:30 or 8 and wandering into the living room. He usually is just fine in there. He will gather up some snacks for mommy or daddy to open for him, and play with toys. But there is some worry that he might cause a ruckus out there alone. Today, when he woke up at 7:15 (and mommy had gone to sleep at 3:15am after watching a few shows with daddy) it was especially painful. Riley came in bed with us for a little bit, but I was worried he would soak through his diaper, so I took him out to the living room. I set up a movie and laid down on the couch, set him up with applesauce, milk and a bar, and closed my eyes. I can't remember when, but he told me he was going to bed, and went in his room and played with his cars there. I slept through the entire movie (<i>Bolt</i>, if you're curious). It wasn't that comfy, but I was glad to have gotten a nap. Daddy got Riley out of his room around 10:45. He is a strange child sometimes. But I love him for it. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
~3~</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Naps have kind of become a luxury item around here. He really fights them hard. I think a solution to this issue (and the one I just mentioned) is getting some heavy curtains along with the blinds. It is just too bright in his room! Yesterday he took a good nap for his Papa. And today he is taking an excellent one for me. It has been 3 hours now. I'm thankful for it. But most of the time when he is laid down in his room, he just plays for an hour and a half (and either parent will go in there periodically and ask him to lay down, and stop playing.) before coming out of his room saying he "waked up." When in fact he never went to sleep! :) He's never really been a good sleeper, but on Wednesday afternoon, he put himself to bed. Some days he knows he will feel better after napping. Other days he goes to war!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
~4~</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This time around I'm particularly worried that something will go wrong. Like the baby will have some congenital defect, or might not make it through the birth. It is a very strong, horrible feeling I have, and I'm struggling with it often. I really try hard to push it out of my mind, but it is difficult to do. I know of at least one other Mama who has admitted to a similar feeling. But it is very difficult to know that Riley is perfect, his birth went beautifully, he has been a healthy little guy, and there are many many things that could have gone wrong. Eventually one of them will, right? Statistics show that problems happen more often than I would like to know. Right now, I'm just not in a place where I should be Googling it, so you will have to live with a generic "things happen" statement. Go ahead and Google it yourself...unless you are also pregnant or trying to conceive. Because some things are just better off not known. Maybe having gestational diabetes is my statistic? Lets hope so...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
~5~</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I took a while putting groceries away and Googling carbohydrates in foods, so I don't have much more time. Now I need to go prepare and start dinner for Riley and I. So this will have to do for now. :)</div>

For fun, I take him to the local park and ride garage, and we slowly drive through looking at BMW's, Audi's and Volkswagen's. It is his candy store. He's always so sad to leave. He now calls all parking garages "the W garage."<br />
<br />
Some days in order to get him to put his shoes on it helps to call his shoes "W shoes." Anything BMW related, and he's in.<br />
<br />
Jamaal has been driving a new-to-him Jetta. He bought it from his other work because he loves white old body style Jetta's, and he needed a car to drive while his Audi is in the shop. But we have had a BMW from his work (and therefore it is a "dealer" car) in our driveway for quite some time now. Riley is obsessed with it, of course. In order for him to be okay with us not driving it, I had to tell him it was broken. So everyday, he says, "Daddy fix-it W." Sometimes this is a question, ("Will daddy fix the BMW today?") and other times it is a command/request ("Please fix the BMW, Daddy!"). Jamaal has not been able to drive it, because he hasn't had a license plate to put on it. So it isn't exactly <i>broken</i>, but missing an important part. Well, on Thursday, Jamaal got a plate from his work. When he went to work, and Riley dragged me out on the porch to watch him leave, (as is our routine) daddy left in the W. Shock. Anger. And very likely some jealousy overwhelmed my poor boy. He was very hurt that his daddy would take <i>his</i> W, without him. He watched him leave, but once I set him back down in the house, he was throwing toys, kicking off his shoes. He was very, very upset. He started saying "'Mere Daddy, Volkswagen." (Meaning: "Come here Daddy, and take your Volkswagen") Then he started saying: "See it W." Followed by some fake, very pathetic tear-less crying. He wanted so badly to go for a ride in the W. It was unfair that his daddy got to ride in it and he did not. I felt badly for the kid, but it was pretty comical the way he reacted. I told Jamaal how upset he had made his son, and his response was that Riley could ride in it the following day. But, I explained, Riley didn't understand that. Besides, he didn't see it coming. (And I didn't either.) Sometimes a little preparation goes a long way for a toddler. :)<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
* * *</div>
<br />
He loves to help me bake. And honestly he is pretty good at helping me. So far he has helped me make banana bread, cookies, pancakes, frosting, and cinnamon rolls. He's helped with frosting a couple times. He likes that the most because he gets to taste more. He's had a couple bites of cookie dough (who can resist anyway?) but I only let him have a little bit. He is getting better and better at bringing a full cup of flour or sugar to the bowl and dumping without making a mess. He has had a couple problems, but it isn't too bad. I have spilled as much as he has before.<br />
<br />
One night when we were making the cinnamon rolls, we had to stop to let the dough rise. That meant we would not be able to eat any finished product. (And it was getting late so I decided to finish the rolls the next day. Well Riley didn't understand this. So, we pulled out the cookie dough balls from the freezer and put some on a cookie sheet. He is a typical toddler and likes things in a certain order. He lined them up on the cookie sheet.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GsRJUEww1QU/UWjWSo2FFOI/AAAAAAAABZ4/11xu2oCO0nU/s1600/13+-+2" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GsRJUEww1QU/UWjWSo2FFOI/AAAAAAAABZ4/11xu2oCO0nU/s320/13+-+2" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
So mommy said, "Riley, we need to put them about 1-2 inches apart. Like this." And I showed him what I meant, by spreading them out. He immediately began helping me, forming a line of dough balls along the top of the sheet instead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ueCj0bgSQtc/UWjWSpSQMnI/AAAAAAAABaE/do9P_pYel0A/s1600/13+-+3" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ueCj0bgSQtc/UWjWSpSQMnI/AAAAAAAABaE/do9P_pYel0A/s320/13+-+3" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I was cracking up laughing. And had to capture a picture of it. He did it quite a few times, with me trying to show him what I meant, and him lining them up instead. Eventually I had to literally hold him back so that I could cook the cookies. He was upset, and crying out "No! No!" but once they were in the oven I had him look through the oven window and watch them bake. He eventually got over it. Oh the joys of toddler-hood. :)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CeZ_4pSdaAI/UWjWSpDc74I/AAAAAAAABaA/3e_wsIrj8pw/s1600/13+-+1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CeZ_4pSdaAI/UWjWSpDc74I/AAAAAAAABaA/3e_wsIrj8pw/s320/13+-+1" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And here is my minion helping with the frosting, as we waited for the cinnamon rolls to rise. He moves so much, I can never capture him. But you get the idea, frosting is yummy!Nurse Neaglehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06422422838473085745noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7576289851003404827.post-24535182706319388632013-02-20T23:29:00.000-08:002013-02-20T23:29:51.469-08:00All about RileyI haven't posted a lot about my little man lately, but I've been wanting to. He is at an age where I find myself saying "I'm going to miss the way he says...." Eventually his grammar and pronunciation will become <i>correct</i>. And it will hurt me a little when that happens. Perhaps I could home school and keep all of his cute words the way he says them now? ;)<br />
<br />
And so...a little about Mr. Riley:<br />
<br />
Coming is: <i>Come-meem.</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
Sleeping is: <i>Seeping.</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
He screams <i>barking!</i> at the dogs when they are barking. Telling them to be quiet, as I so often do. :)<br />
<br />
Pizza is pronounced: <i>Fot-see</i>. We don't know why...I have gotten in the habit of calling it fotsee myself. :)<br />
<br />
My husband loves cars, and his love has rubbed off on our son. Riley adores cars. Plays with them all the time (along with his trains) and pays attention to any car driving or parked that he sees. He can identify a BMW, Volkswagen, or Audi. He can pick out a van as something that his Grandma drives. He knows his favorite cousin, Connor, often rides in a Yukon (he picks them out regardless of color, by pointing at one and saying "Connor?"). But, by far, his favorite car is a BMW, which he calls simply <i>W. </i>I drive a Volkswagen, and for some time my husband has been driving BMW's. Mr. Riley will often get upset if we are taking my car. He would prefer to ride in a W any day Doesn't matter the condition, or year. If it has a BMW emblem on it, he's a fan. Today my husband traded the BMW for an Audi, and he (my husband) dreaded telling Riley. Last night, he said "Riley isn't going to be happy." We have a little car snob. :) Riley and I went for a walk the other day, and we passed by 3 different BMWs. I know this because somebody pointed them out to me as we went by. ;)<br />

On Thursday I had an appointment with my midwife. It wasn't anything too exciting. Just a physical exam, <i>ahem</i>, of my lady parts. It is always a bit uncomfortable, but I really like my midwife so it wasn't so bad. She is going to be perfect for me and Jamaal. I had remembered her telling me at my last appointment that I would need to do a 1 hour glucose tolerance test at this appointment. But I wasn't 100% sure. So I had a bar with only 9 carbohydrates and some water as I was leaving in the morning.<br />
<br />
Turns out I had the opportunity to take the lab slip and do it at my convenience, but I decided to get it over with. Since I had prepared myself, and had a babysitter for the booger. I chose fruit punch this time and it really wasn't <i>that</i> bad. Though I did get terrible heartburn. I took zofran beforehand, but didn't even think about heartburn. Next time I'll remember. ;)<br />
<br />
Since I have issues with my thyroid she also wanted the lab to draw my thyroid levels. Just to be sure all was fine. The person who drew my blood used a very large needle and it really really hurt. I was a bit annoyed. It hurt the rest of the day, and that has never happened to me before. He could have used a smaller needle.<br />
<br />
I celebrated with some sushi followed by a trip to Costco afterwards. :) It was lovely.<br />
<br />
Friday afternoon I got a phone call from my midwife I passed the glucose test. Very exciting. Of course I will have to repeat the test again later on, but I'm glad to know I can eat some carbs right now. Unfortunately it wasn't all good news. My TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) was low. It was 0.24 and the normal range starts at 0.45. So it is quite a bit low. But the nurse that filled out my requisition did not check the box to also check the T3 and T4 levels. These are the free hormones, the TSH stimulates their release. So, in theory, a person could have low TSH but still have adequate hormones However, we will have to have a redraw to make sure the levels are okay. Otherwise I will have to take some thyroid medication. (And that means some more testing of my levels I'm sure.) So fingers crossed they are normal. I've never had a problem with my levels before. At least that I remember. I feel like my TSH was on the low side with Riley, but we didn't need to do anything. We'll see. I'll go get my levels drawn next week. She said she would call me with the results once she had them.<br />
<br />
I've decided to be more active. Because I have been gaining weight a bit too fast for my taste. I only want to gain 25 pounds total and I've already gained 8. Blech. I really wish food wasn't so good!<br />
<br />
In other news I got a phone call last night from the fraud department at my credit union. Someone had stolen my card (or card number) and had made purchases on my behalf. I still had my card (it is now shredded) so it leads me to believe they had stolen my information from some online account. I'm really annoyed that people do this. I feel violated. But I'm glad my credit union has a fraud division, and they realized it wasn't me. They were able to charge $1400 to my debit card. $1000 at Macy's and $400 at Victoria Secret. They apparently attempted a few other places like Best Buy but were declined. They have a $2000 limit (or is it $2500?) set on our debit card purchases per day so that is probably why it was declined. And also why the fraud division was alerted. So on Tuesday after work I will have to stop by my credit union to get it all straightened out. And to get a new debit card. I'm a little sad, because I have had the same pin for the life of my debit account and should probably change it now. I have no idea how they were able to use my card without physically having it. Because it appears it wasn't an online purchase. Who knows. It will all work itself out in the end.Nurse Neaglehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06422422838473085745noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7576289851003404827.post-68337025222214953452013-02-02T15:47:00.000-08:002013-02-02T15:47:57.067-08:0013 weeksToday I am 13 weeks. I have officially begun the 2nd trimester. It is surreal, because it seems to have flown by (although I remember thinking it was taking <i>forever</i> around week 6 or so). I am finally getting some of my energy back, which is a wonderful feeling. But it also helps that Riley has been waking up at 0930 or 1000 some days. I definitely appreciate it when that happens. :)<br />
<br />
I have some fears for the future, especially once the babe is born, because Riley never slept. And I just don't know how I would be able to function with two tots to look after. I just keep hoping that this baby will know how to sleep. We'll see though.<br />
<br />
<b>Some gripes:</b><br />
<br />
- I got the bill for the lab draw they did at the start of my pregnancy and I am floored by it. $696.30 for the labs alone. (Thankfully we have insurance so it only cost us $211, but still. It is frustrating.) It is even more irritating that $300 worth of the tests were for a tox screen. Ahem. I could have told them the results of that one. Absolutely zilch. I don't even think I've had Tylenol in the recent past. (Oddly enough Tylenol is often included in toxicology screens.) Even testing for Hepatitis C was a little uncalled for. However, I could have been exposed to it at work, so I would have let that one slide. Needless to say I'll be paying closer attention to what they draw from me in the future. If there is a baby #3, I need to remember this.<br />
<br />
- Today some sciatica pain has started up for me. I'm not thrilled that it has started this soon. But I know women out there will sympathize with me. I need to find a chiropractor, I've been saying this for years now, but I just don't know who to trust.<br />
<br />
- I have <i>nothing</i> to wear. Nothing, that looks appealing on me anyway. I feel frumpy in my maternity clothes, and uncomfortable in my normal person clothes. I'm a little sad that most of my maternity clothes are too big, even the jeans, because I was smaller when I got pregnant this time than I was when I got pregnant with Riley. Right now I'm wearing a skirt and shirt, and feel okay, but it is freezing out there! What I need to get are some leggings/tights, I'm going to go on Amazon after this to search for some.<br />
<br />
- I'm hungry again. I mean, eat what is in sight, if food isn't in sight, find food and put it in my sight, all day long, hungry. This happened with Riley and I gained way too much way too fast, and ended up with gestational diabetes. I need to get better at being careful. Today I bought some foods at Trader Joe's that will hopefully help me. (Like fruits and vegetables and Greek yogurt. Fage is my favorite. And some frozen foods for Riley and I to have for dinners instead of thinking about fast food.) I'm not perfect, but I'm trying to be better.<br />
<br />
- Heartburn is starting yet again. So far it has only been at night, but I'm sure very soon it will be a 24-7 issue as it was with Riley.<br />
<br />
<b>Some positives:</b><br />
<br />
- The nausea is nearly gone. Okay so it wasn't as bad as other women's experiences with morning sickness. I never lost my cookies. I was able to eat through it (though many times it was cheese and crackers or something bland). But it was incredibly uncomfortable to be gagging and dry heaving out of nowhere. (Not to mention making people around me uncomfortable.) Sometimes I wished that I could puke, just to make it stop, and to have some relief. But instead, Zofran saved the day. Around week 9 was the worst, and I took Zofran nearly every day. Smells can still trigger it, but it is nothing like it used to be.<br />
<br />
- I've already mentioned that my energy is coming back. But it is a positive. I finally feel like doing something else other than sleep or sit.<br />
<br />
-Since week 8 I've been showing. Now it is quite prominent, not necessarily something a stranger might point out, but my family and friends can see it for sure. It is definitely the best part about being pregnant, looking pregnant, feeling pregnant. I have to be honest, there have been times where I've forgotten that I am pregnant. :) Pretty soon that will be a little bit tough. I swear I've been feeling the bean doing flips, but I'm pretty sure it is just <a href="http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/peristalsis">peristalsis</a>. ;) I can't wait to have boxing matches with the little booger.<br />

I want to post it simply because I want to remember some of this. :)</i><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>November 25th & 27th, 2012</b><br />
I had some slight spotting and cramping so I was sure I was going to start my period soon. You see, if you remember from <a href="http://toward-the-horizon.blogspot.com/2012/10/change-to-come.html">this</a> post we had decided to wait before having another child. I put Jamaal in charge of using condoms, but he chose to not use them a little too soon. When I thought my period was going to start, I got a little sad, because while I agreed to wait, that pocket in my heart was yearning to be filled.<br />
<br />
<b>December 4th</b><br />
I rode the bus to and from work. On the way home, I felt nauseated. To the point where I was looking for a place that it would be safe for me to expel my stomach contents into. (I decided upon my lunch box, if you were curious.) It was then I realized that it had been a week since I thought my period was going to start. So I went to the dollar store and bought 9 tests. Turns out I only needed one. :) <span style="font-size: xx-small;">but secretly I've used 3 just to make sure. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span>
<b>December 5th</b><br />
I called to make an appointment with my midwife to see about an ultrasound to check for my actual due date. But it could be anywhere from July 29th to August 6th. I have the unfortunate predicament of feeling like I'll have this baby early as well (Riley came 2 weeks early). But I just don't feel like I'd be that lucky. Especially with a summer baby. :) I'm feeling queasy off and on. But also feeling hungry a lot too. I feel like I am about 3 months pregnant right now, I am so very bloated. It makes me just a little nervous for it to be twins. (knowing my luck they would be both boys.) ;)<br />
<br />
I'm thinking we will tell our families on Christmas. And everyone else later on in the week. :)<br />
<br />
(We ended up telling our family at Riley's birthday party. And everyone else around Christmas time.)Nurse Neaglehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06422422838473085745noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7576289851003404827.post-71739941095557558012013-01-10T23:14:00.001-08:002013-01-10T23:14:35.688-08:00Some NewsI cannot wait to post something about our news, so here it goes: We're pregnant.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MYWm2KY5rpE/UO-5YX20mOI/AAAAAAAABY0/f2FrJlSdrPU/s1600/13+-+1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="313" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MYWm2KY5rpE/UO-5YX20mOI/AAAAAAAABY0/f2FrJlSdrPU/s400/13+-+1" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Today we had an ultrasound and meet and greet with my new midwife (my old one had the <i>nerve </i>to move to North Carolina for her husband's schooling. RUDE! Haha.) She was really nice, observant and made me happy with my choice. She's not too preachy, and really seemed interested in my past. She had obviously read over my chart before meeting with me, and had made notes that I would need testing for Gestational Diabetes earlier (since I have a history of having it with my first pregnancy) as well as some testing of my thyroid. It was nice to see that she cared about <i>me</i> and did not just go with the standard protocol. So, I hope I am lucky enough to labor during the day or when she is on call.<br />
<br />
<b><u>How I'm feeling.</u></b><br />
<b><u><br /></u></b>
<b><i>Nausea</i></b><br />
This time is a bit different. (<i>okay so after reading all of my early post from my first pregnancy, I have realized that I did have some nausea with Riley. I apparently have blacked that bit out of my memory, because I honestly thought I had absolutely NONE. However, I can tell you that it was quick to leave with the last pregnancy.) </i>Last time, I would have a wave of nausea that would make me want to get to the bathroom, but it would pass before I would make it there. This time, I gag and dry heave periodically. It is worse when my stomach is empty. It is weird because it hits me very suddenly. And sometimes I feel some acid rise up with the gagging. It is those cases that make me worried I'm about to lose my cookies. Fortunately, my MIL received a prescription for Zofran after her foot surgery, that she never used and has given them to me. So I have been able to take a couple (only needed it twice so far) to make sure I keep my food in my belly. I really don't want to puke. I talked to my midwife about this today, and she said it was fine if I take it when necessary. Food is good to me, most of the time, but I'm pretty picky. I really am having a hard time cooking because things dont's sound good until they are made and in front of me. I've been eating out a lot, which is not good for me, I know, but when I am able to look at a menu and pick something out, I can find something that sounds palatable.<br />
<br />
<b><i>Exhaustion.</i></b><br />
One of the very first symptoms I had was exhaustion. It is a bit tricky to be able to sleep when your toddler has other plans for you. But I've been lucky, and have napped at the same time as Riley, or he has stayed the night at his grandparents' houses for miscellaneous reasons, so I have been able to sleep in some days. It isn't as awful for me, as it was with the first pregnancy, because I am used to a certain amount of being tired. That's what kids do to a parent. ;)<br />
<br />
<b><i>Body Image.</i></b><br />
This time I've felt ginormous already. At 9 weeks, I feel like I'm showing. Like last time, my clothes hide my belly well. But there were times where I actually thought there were two babies in there, because I felt so huge. My pants still fit though, so that is good. I'm guess it is bloating that I'm seeing. But I have not gained anything thus far. (I actually lost a couple ounces from last time I went in.) So I'm happy about that. :)<br />
<br />
<b><i>Gestational Diabetes.</i></b><br />
It is early yet to be diagnosed with anything. But I'm sure I will end up having GD, since I was diagnosed with my first pregnancy. However, this time around I am doing things a bit differently. I'm not drinking a Frozen Coke from Burger King <i>everyday</i>. Haha. What can I say? I had a craving, and I impulsed on it. I am conscious of every carb I put in my body, but can I be honest? Carbs taste good. They are what I want right now. Proteins are good too, but only if they go with a really tasty carb. Like, tonight for example, I had me some chicken teriyaki and rice. It was wonderful. I made sure Riley helped a lot with the rice. And he did, he ate about half of it, but I really enjoyed my meal. I pulled out my blood sugar monitor and have been testing myself the last two days, just to see how I'm doing, and I'm in fabulous control right now. Sometimes I go as high as 112 after eating, but before eating I haven't been higher than 90. Even after having ice cream, I've had really good sugars. Anyway, I'm going to remain hopeful...and will have to test twice at least this pregnancy, once at 20 weeks (and if I pass that) again at 28 weeks when they test everyone else. Hopefully, I'll be able to control myself to keep my sugars down, but I'm not going to completely deny myself carbohydrates while I can tolerate them. I plan on checking my sugars once a month or perhaps every couple weeks, just to see where I am, but will not lose sleep over it. At least not right now. <br />
<br />
And of course, I am super excited about being pregnant with my best friend Jessie! It is so funny that we were able to make it happen, and I'm glad that my baby will have a friend about the same age. :)<br />
<br />
Tomorrow I am meeting up with some friends, and two of them don't know yet. So I will post to Facebook at the end of the day. Until then. ;)<br />
<br />Nurse Neaglehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06422422838473085745noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7576289851003404827.post-1584499847658285202013-01-05T20:37:00.000-08:002013-01-05T20:37:07.374-08:00The Lunch DateToday I decided to treat myself to a lunch date with my toddler. It was a bit silly, now thinking back, to go to Costco at just before noon on a Saturday, but I decided the hot dog was worth it. :) Also, I had no reason to go <i>shopping </i>there<i>, </i>as I just went earlier in the week, which makes it a bit easier to wait in line, not having to worry about a cart.<br />
<br />
But still...with a wiggly toddler you begin to worry about things like: will he scream and shout? will he become limp like a noodle and refuse to use his legs? will I be able to eat my dog in peace?<br />
<br />
At Costco, they do not have high chairs for the wiggly ones. Just benches and tables. So, it is tricky to keep them corralled at times. But today, little Mr. Riley was on his best behavior. He walked when I asked him to, he stayed nearby, he used an appropriate toddler voice, he only once got down from the bench, but got back up when I asked him to. It was like magic. All of my fears, were for no reason at all. He was a perfect angel for me. And I was a little sad, but proud at the same time. He's growing up, and of course I want him to, but sometimes I wish we could just freeze time and live in this moment.<br />
<br />
Another mommy, wearing an infant, and her toddler had lunch there too. But she was in charge of a cart, so had to sit on the end of the table opposite of me, by the walkway. (I chose the end next to the wall, so I had only one exit point to cover.) Her son, walked down to our end of the table, staring at Riley, chomping on his lunch. She might have known he was there, or perhaps it took her a while to react, realizing he was safe where he was. But I took the opportunity to tell Riley that he was being <i>naughty</i>. He needed to stay with his mommy, and listen to her. I waited to say this until the toddler was on his way back to his mom (or perhaps just back for more food). I've heard a friend say this before: it seems if someone else's child is acting naughty, your own children act a bit better, because they are embarrassed for the other child. I am just happy when it isn't my child setting the poor example. :) However, I had planned an exit strategy if my babe didn't behave. I would pack up our food and go, and eat in the car. That being said, the roving toddler I mention, wasn't being obnoxious, he was just not staying still. I'm not exactly sure why she didn't put him in the cart to eat, if for no other reason than to chain him down. But of course, it is not my place to judge, she had her reasons. And I'm sure one day it will be me with one child that won't sit, stay or listen. (actually I'm sure that has happened to be before already.) :)<br />
<br />
Anyway, he ate pretty good too, and I wasn't expecting that either. I didn't think he would like my hot dog, so I got him some pizza, which he ate about equal amounts of both. So that meant I was able to have some pizza with my hot dog too. He saw someone with some frozen yogurt, and he was pretty excited saying "Cream! Cream!" And I told him, if we were still hungry, we would get some, but of course I was way too full after lunch for some frozen yogurt, so perhaps next time. Lucky for me, he had forgotten by the time we were leaving.<br />
<br />
The magical lunch date ended with the following: as we were walking to our car, I hugged him and thanked him for being so good. I asked for a kiss, but had to steal one, because he didn't want to give one willingly. He giggled and wiggled, and as I was getting ready to put him in his seat, he started fighting yelling "No! No!" He did not want in the car. He flailed his arms about, which promptly met my face, and I was knocked straight back to reality. We aren't out of the tantrum phase yet. (And one could probably argue that we will never be out of that phase, at least while he is still living under our roof...) It was accidental, but I told him to be nice to mommy and settle down. And he did.<br />
<br />
We next went to Safeway for a couple groceries, and upon arriving home, he started to scream in his car seat. He does this a lot actually and it is quite the pain. Most of the time it is while riding in the car, but sometimes he will do it when he is upset or tired at home as well. Today, I said: "Riley, why are you screaming?" And he stopped, and said "Sorry, Mommy." And that was that. I laughed and said thank you. Perhaps we are on to something here. :)Nurse Neaglehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06422422838473085745noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7576289851003404827.post-6282028088739307382012-12-06T22:52:00.004-08:002012-12-06T22:53:28.318-08:00Just an update<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I haven't posted in a while. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Not much has been happening around here. I kind of decided to have a low-key birthday for Riley this year. Just the family is invited. Last year was a huge party, and a lot of stress, and while he had a blast, it isn't something he will remember. So we will just have a cake with the grandparents and his aunt and uncles (and cousins if they aren't too cool for us yet.) ;) Next year, maybe, we'll have a bigger party for him. Also, last year he got a lot of toys, it was a bit ridiculous. We had to give some to the grandparents, because there was just too much for him to play with at our place. I love to get fun gifts for kids, so I totally get it, but there is only some much time in a day for playing. ;)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Tonight, Riley went pee pee in the potty for the very first time. He has been asking to go potty a lot after diaper changes, so I put him on the toilet and he sits there looking in the bowl, playing with his belly button and talking about bubbles. Sometimes he sits there for 45 seconds sometimes only 15 before saying "All done" and trying to get down. I'm not really pushing potty time right now, because he is still young for it, and I don't want to stress him out, but if he asks to go, I'll let him. Tonight he asked after his diaper was changed, and it was almost immediate that he started peeing. He started laughing, he was so excited. I kept saying good job and cheering. But I thought to myself "now what?" I hear about moms using M&M's and jelly beans as rewards, so was I supposed to give him one for going? Maybe is this it for us, will he be easy to potty train? Or did we just get lucky this time, and he just so happened to have to really go? It is too early to tell yet. I'm not fully ready to believe he is ready to train, but we'll see how it goes. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">This weekend will be a busy one for us. We have a birthday party on Saturday and another on Sunday. Unfortunately, I have to work on Sunday, so I won't be able to go to that party, but my sister-in-law will be taking Riley for me. It is a 4 year old's party to a movie theater to watch Cars. Riley loves that movie, (well he prefers the second one...but he will sit through the first one too.) Kind of. He never really sits through a movie unless I'm holding him down (like to get him to go to sleep.) I hope he enjoys himself. :)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Sunday my parents return from being in Australia and New Zealand. I cannot wait to see them again. I talk to them nearly every day so it has been pretty hard. Riley is going to flip out when he sees them, I think. :)</span>Nurse Neaglehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06422422838473085745noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7576289851003404827.post-90188648751401046902012-11-16T20:04:00.002-08:002012-11-16T20:04:41.747-08:00Fair warning: Not a happy post. I am having one of <i>those</i> weeks. It started as a really awful Monday at work, and has sort of bubbled over into the following several days. I thought I was over it, but today I got a phone call from one of the assistant managers from work asking me about if I would be willing to attend a meeting with the Attendings and Managers on our floor next Monday, and in an unrelated twist she asked how I was doing after last Monday. I started to say I was fine, and noticed myself begin to cry again, and realized that I was indeed, not over it. I am not fine.<br />
<br />
Nursing is not easy. And last Monday was one of the worst shifts of my career. It was hard, emotional, and busy. I was torn into 5 uneven pieces and could not figure out how to make myself whole again. At one point, as I was preparing for a simple procedure, I stepped out of my patient's room to grab something out of our supply drawer just outside the room. I stood there for a second with my mind blank. I literally had taken 5 steps, and in those 5 steps had forgotten why I had moved in the first place. I think I stood there for a full minute before I remembered what it was I needed. A simple piece of gauze. The patient noticed and laughed a little, saying I was too young to be as forgetful as he was. But I told him, "when you have 5 peoples' lives in your head, you begin to get a bit forgetful." He said that it would be worse if I had kids, so I changed my number to 6. I didn't mention to him that it was about my lunch hour and I hadn't a notion of being able to take a lunch in the near future. I was stressed out. His family members were getting demanding. I had mentioned to them that I would do the procedure at some point during the shift, and when I didn't get in there right away to do it, they went to a doctor to demand it happen. The doctor then relayed the message to me, and I told her I was going to do it, I just needed a second to breathe.<br />
<br />
I hope that the stress of being sick or having a loved one in the hospital doesn't cloud my vision so I don't treat the staff poorly, even when I am hurting or scared.<br />
<br />
This job is <i>personal</i>. Sometimes un-comfortably so. Last Monday I was so busy, so so busy. I wasn't able to be there for a patient who needed me. She was stewing in her room, creating anxiety and stress for herself, that was unnecessary. Her situation is unfair. She didn't deserve to be stressed out by me. Her friend came up to me at the front desk, to let me know that the patient was threatening to leave. I lost it right then. I felt that I had let her down. When I envisioned how my day would go, this was not a part of it. I was overwhelmed, drowning in my tasks, and unfortunately that meant she went a bit neglected. In some cases, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. I didn't have time to check in for no reason. The doctors had been in and told her some conflicting information. All of these things broke what little trust I had earned. The assistant nurse manager went in to the patient's room, and listened to her complaints. Afterwards she asked that I go back in to speak with the patient and clear up some information, and also to allow the patient to tell me why she was upset. I walked in the room and burst into tears. It was difficult. It was uncomfortable. It was hard.<br />
<br />
And even through all of that she still wanted me to be the one to hang her chemotherapy later that day. I told her, that I was just too emotional to do it. I didn't feel comfortable, I was too shaky and overwhelmed to concentrate on hanging a life altering drug.<br />
<br />
And after all of that I sat down to eat at 4:30pm. The latest lunch I've ever had at work. And at the end of the day, I had an hours worth of charting and catch up to do before I could come home. To an empty house.<br />

The next day I had a headache and decided to call in sick to get some extra sleep. I wish I could let go of my emotions. But, like I said before, this job is personal.Nurse Neaglehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06422422838473085745noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7576289851003404827.post-78086037700574986742012-11-10T21:51:00.001-08:002012-11-10T21:51:17.548-08:00Evening shiftThe husband has been on evening shift for an entire week now. On Monday evening, I sent a text to him saying that Riley and I didn't like him being gone. And that is still true. We don't care too much for it. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But there are some nice aspects. I will stay up later to wait up for him, and I do miss that (staying up late, I mean). You see, while Jamaal was on day shift, he was so tired from getting up at 5:30 that he wanted to get to bed by 9:30pm. And while it is smart for <i>me</i> to also get to bed then, I enjoy staying up until 10:30 or 11. (On days when I work, this is definitely something I regret the next day, but I do enjoy <strike>adult time</strike> <span style="font-size: xx-small;">playing video games</span> after the Booger is asleep.) We try to go to bed at the same time each night. There are times when someone stays up later than the other, but for the most part we both make our way to bed at the same time. And to be honest I feel a bit <i>guilty</i> if I stay up later than he does. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I also like having Jamaal home during the mornings. It seems to get me moving a little faster. I have been able to get more chores done in the morning, and then I'm motivated and get more done during the evening too. I'm nearly all caught up on laundry. <i>Nearly</i>. Now the key is to keep up with it. Doing a couple loads each week. I hope I can. Here it is, my Sunday night (I work Sunday through Tuesday) and all I want to do is blog, shower, and play a couple video games. Okay, and maybe have a slice of freshly made pumpkin pie. :) My motivation to do housework is waning. It also helps me to get a shower in. ;)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
BUT, I hope that it comes back after my 3 day stretch of working is done. <i>And I'm allowed a break right?</i> </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Today I made burritos and they turned out pretty well. A little spicy, but not too bad. I was pretty happy with the fact that I was able to roll a burrito and they remained intact for the oven. I swear every other time I tried making them it turns into a casserole. :) I should post the recipe, because it was pretty easy to make. Maybe I will...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Meals are something that are difficult for me now. Because dinner is something I make at least 4 days of the week, and Jamaal isn't a huge fan of left overs. He is being a good sport with me though, and taking things I wouldn't expect him to take to work for dinner. I just don't think it is cost effective for him to buy meals every day at work, when I could make him 4-5 for the same price. So I've been trying to revamp my menu choices. And probably will have a lot more deli meat in the house. (In the past I will buy it for one night's dinner, and usually end up throwing it out, because I don't eat a ton at a time, and try to stay away from a lot of bread products. Because Jamaal has never brought a lunch with him to work.) I guess I should have mentioned that sooner. It makes it even more of a challenge. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The best news is that Jamaal seems happier. Less stress. More sleep. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I don't know if I'll ever be able to convince him to go back to day shift. (Night shift would be much worse for me. I would hate to be alone at night. And keeping Riley quiet during the day to let him sleep?? Impossible. I would be able to sleep, but Jamaal can hear a pin drop.) Unfortunately, he really doesn't like waking up early, as he would have to working day shift. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Okay well. I hope you aren't bored now. Pretty sure this is one of the driest posts in a long time. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But I posted. ;) </div>

My little boy is sure a character. Every day is so much fun these days. Well, at least parts of the day are fun. We still have some hard times. But then he will do something sweet, or cute, or funny, and I will smile and think, "how did I get so lucky?" The above photo was taken after nap time. I don't think he was quite ready to get up. But he was squeaking and fussing, so daddy got him up. We both laughed out loud when we saw his hair. It was worse...if you can believe that...right after sitting up in his crib. I didn't have my phone on me though, so it was a few minutes later when I got this shot. I have about 5 others prior to this one, but his eyes are closed. SO I had to get this shot without the flash. He was so very annoyed with me. And after this I broke the news that mommy was going bye-bye. Haha...mommy is so mean! :) (Don't worry, he quickly got over it. Saying "bye-bye" and walking me to the front door.)<br />

<br />
<br />
The above video (if it decides to show up) was taken after he found a pacifier on the table. You see, the first 8 months of his life were very hard on me. He did not know how to sleep. I was sleep deprived and desperate to find something to sooth him, aside from me. I was exhausted and desperate for some relief. I bought EVERY type of pacifier out there. I searched desperately for some sort of different shape that might appease him. But to no avail. I think he took it a total of 2 times and kept it in his mouth for like 5 minutes at a time. Seriously folks. It was a rough time. But here he is making fun of his mama. ;) He doesn't even know how to suck on a binky and keep it in his mouth. (though I must admit, I tried this particular one too, and it is pretty difficult to suck on.)<br />
<br />
The past week or so he has really started to talk up a storm. It is an adventure every day with him, you never know what might come out of his mouth. Right know he is big into "Thank you." He hands me something, and when I take it from him, "ank coo." The waitress refills my water, he says "ank coo." It just about melts my heart. Next step is working on "you're welcome."<br />
<br />
The other day a new mommy commented that she couldn't wait for her baby to do something that Riley was doing. And I totally remember feeling this way when Riley was months old. There were times when I looked forward to the next milestone. And while this reaction is completely <i>normal</i>. And sometimes we say these things without really meaning anything by them. But I think there is something in loving the moment your child is in now. There is something so beautiful about your baby today, right now. Even if they are screaming and squirming and fighting sleep. I had so many struggles during the first months of Riley's life (and I definitely have some struggles today) but I look back on those moments with such reverence and a desire to be able to go back in time and snuggle with the Riley of 2011. I guess what I'm saying is each milestone is special in its own way, try to live in the now without looking too far forward. Because you will never get that time back.<br />

He will start a week from today. It is really, really exciting news for us. As he will <i>finally </i>have benefits, and hope for promotions within the company. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It is something we have been dreaming about for quite some time now. He attempted applying a couple years ago, but to no avail. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now we are ready for a new kind of adventure. We have settled into a routine, and it will be shaken up a bit. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The main issue is that he will be working evening shift, at least to start. Monday through Friday from 2:00-10:30pm. He has also offered to keep working Saturdays at his current job. But I'm not sure how long he will keep that up. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
He is looking forward to sleeping in. And I'm looking forward to doing water aerobics again. (I plan on going in the mornings twice a week, he and Riley can sleep in while I go work out!) And I should be able to go grocery shopping alone! (Oh the simple things in life...) :) </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We are looking forward to actual vacation and sick <i>leave</i> from work. (Currently he has to ask for time off, and may or may not get it.) </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And benefits! Don't forget about them! Currently my insurance has a huge deductible (because I opted for the plan with a HSA) so I'm hoping I could use his insurance as my secondary plan and cut down some of my out of pocket cost. (Though I must admit I'm not sure how this would work, if the secondary insurance would only go into effect after I've reached my deductible or not...) </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
While there are many positive things about this change, there are a lot of <i>challenges</i> that we will face. And they are a little distracting for me right now. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm not looking forward to evenings alone. Specifically bedtime. On nights when I'm not working, I will likely stay up and wait for Jamaal to come home, because we usually do not go to bed now until close to midnight. But I look forward to the time when Jamaal gets home, because I have a little help with Riley. Perhaps it is just because I've been with Riley all day long, and I'm just ready for some assistance. So maybe it will help to have daddy home in the morning before nap time But being a negative Nelly, I've been focusing on the opposite. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Currently, on Mondays and Tuesdays when I work, Jamaal is in charge of dropping Riley off at my father-in-law's or my parent's house depending on the day. And if I work for 12 hours, Jamaal will also retrieve Riley from whichever house he is at. Now, I will be in charge of picking up Riley, even after working for 12 hours. And let me just say, I'm really not looking forward to this! After working for 12+ hours, I really just want to come home and get in my jam-jams. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Meal times will also be a little different from here on out. It will be strange just cooking for Riley and I. And I keep bugging Jamaal about what sort of things he will want to bring for lunches, and he is annoyed with me for even thinking about it. (I'm a planner, he is not). But I want to know if I should make dinners for lunch so he can bring them with him to work. Or if I should make dinner and save it for him for the next day. Or if he just wants me to get some lunch meat, chip bags, and carrots for a brown bag style meal. Leaving Riley and I on our own for meals. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And the last, and greatest challenge, is putting off trying for a second pregnancy. We are not in agreement on this one, but I will not force my husband to father another child, if he is not ready to do so. I understand his hesitancy: there is so much unknown about our future. Our finances will likely be tight, as he will most definitely be taking a pay cut for this job (with opportunities for raises along the way). I hope that this hesitancy will dissipate after a month (or two) of work. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Because nine months in itself is a long time to wait...<br /><div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<strong style="font-size: 130%;">--- 1 ---</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Last Friday I sort of talked about how I forgot to pay <a href="http://toward-the-horizon.blogspot.com/2012/08/exhausting.html#qt6">our garbage bill</a>. It was a sort of embarrassing moment of mine. That day I got a "notice" in the mail about how I had an "apparent disregard" of their previous attempts to collect. (They sent that notice prior to me calling and paying off our overdue balance). I'm going to go ahead and blame my husband on this one, because he usually gets the mail and doesn't have any specific place that he puts it. So it ends up being placed wherever he stops first. This means we have piles of mail here and there, and I have no idea what pile is old or new or important. We need to figure out a system I guess. But to be quite honest, that was not where I thought this take was going to go...instead I was going to speak about all the money we are saving by adding yard waste. :)</div>
<br />
<div style="font-size: 130%; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=7576289851003404827" name="qt2"></a><strong>--- 2 ---</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In an effort to decrease my family's carbon foot print, I decided to try adding yard waste to our garbage service. A lot of items we use daily can go into the yard waste container, like paper towels, food scraps and <i><span style="font-size: x-small;">should I admit this here?</span></i> <span style="font-size: x-small;">cough</span>..<span style="font-size: xx-small;">.<i>paper plates</i></span>....<span style="font-size: x-small;">cough</span>. By making the switch we were able to decrease from a 60 gallon garbage can to a 32 gallon can (and sometimes we still don't fill that one up!) We save about $100 per year this way as well. Which is a plus. But, and this is a huge but, yard waste is a bit stinky. It wasn't so bad until this last week. I went out to dump the inside food scraps into the outside yard waste, opened the can and the entire rim of the 90-gallon yard waste cart was white and wiggly. I about vomited then and there. It still gives me the chills thinking about it. Nasty, disgusting maggots all over the can. Blech. I went inside to grab something to spray them with, and by the time I came back most of them had wiggled to the ground. They are quite interesting little pustules. They wiggle and roll all over the place. The next morning the majority of them had wiggled/rolled around the corner to the bottom edge of my front porch. They traveled about 25 feet from the can to there. I was disgusted. Surprised. Horrified. I sprayed them like crazy and went to an appointment. I asked my mom how long it takes for them to hatch, because while I don't really care for flies, I prefer them over maggots.<br />
<br />
Later that evening, after Jamaal got home, I went out to the garbage and noticed the maggots were gone. All of them. I couldn't find a single one. Even some of the dead carcasses were missing. I kind of shrugged it off, thought perhaps my darling husband had cleaned, and was happy the nasty buggers were gone. I also noticed this: </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-size: 130%; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLR8LOV6fMbnUSlIpkmzjEWp47qYAyqHbO2Tc6mAyohdnaRVOo6DqCSBgqjoWXcaYqxgYH08ZsYqJ_s6UNmaZ-zxcZq8KiphYQK5-pIIfEc7S3yaR4B-D0Dhf7R939xe8siMa7IFHBCAI/s1600/IMG_1185.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLR8LOV6fMbnUSlIpkmzjEWp47qYAyqHbO2Tc6mAyohdnaRVOo6DqCSBgqjoWXcaYqxgYH08ZsYqJ_s6UNmaZ-zxcZq8KiphYQK5-pIIfEc7S3yaR4B-D0Dhf7R939xe8siMa7IFHBCAI/s320/IMG_1185.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">This is a photo of our driveway. Notice the pieces of moss and debris strewn about. I thought it was left overs of the destruction, and figured my husband had something to do with it. That night I asked my husband about it, and we came to this conclusion: the neighborhood birds had a feast. Because my husband had <i>no</i> idea what I was talking about. This is not the first time I've noticed some moss strewn about, and I thought it was something Jamaal was up to. He, funny enough, thought the same, only about me. We both had a "that makes so much sense" moment, and were able to rest easy knowing we have some friendly (to us, of course, not the maggots) neighborhood birds watching our front stoop.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-size: 130%; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-size: 130%;">
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=7576289851003404827" name="qt3"></a><strong>--- 3 ---</strong></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today I finally called to change our home insurance to the same insurance we use for our cars. Progressive, if you are curious. We will be saving $150 on our home insurance alone. (we will also be saving for our car insurance but Jamaal is in charge of that bill, so I'm not sure how much!) I got a notice that our old carrier would be increasing our rate this year, so I decided now was a good time to change. </div>
<br />
<div style="font-size: 130%; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today I bought some vitamins for me to start taking. I was horrible at taking vitamins when I was pregnant with Riley, because I hated how big the vitamin was, and started to get a bit gag-y when taking it. So I just flat out stopped. I had one of each today, and they tasted pretty good. Now, I'm going to have to wash my vitamin case so I remember to take them everyday. :) I also got some "My first Flinstone vitamins" for Riley. I was giving him some liquid vitamins, but he really hates it now, so unless I mix it in with his milk, he doesn't take it. (and I keep forgetting to do that...) My plan is to put his vitamins in with mine so I remember to give him his. That's the goal anyway! (and I just read on the containers that I'm supposed to take two of each per day...anyone know if Costco carries gummy prenatals?)</div>
<br />
<div style="font-size: 130%; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm really beginning to feel comfortable working at Weight Watchers. I'm constantly worried that I will say the wrong thing though, especially when the clients have gained. I <i>know</i> the feeling. I gained a couple times when I was losing weight, and it is so <i>embarrassing</i>, along with other mixes of emotions. So, I know that they are in a very sensitive place, and anything I say could set them off. It is a lot of stress to have! Plus, I remember feeling uncomfortable weighing in in front of people who already look great; it is easy to forget that the staff at Weight Watchers have been there before. (and actually, some clients don't know that staff have <i>all</i> been there.) I'm kind of one of the youngest staff members I've seen working, and I think that plays a role in how little I'm trusted. But I've been through that before with nursing and I'll get through it... :)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-size: 130%; text-align: center;">

After Riley got up from his nap, he seemed to want to talk on the phone, so I called his Nana, (my mother in law) but by the time she got on the phone, he had decided he didn't want to talk after all. Long story short, she decided to take him for the night tonight since there will be a big family gathering tomorrow in Tacoma. (and she hasn't had him over night in a while since she had surgery this summer) It is always such a treat to be baby-free. :)<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;">I have decided to try and scan all of Riley's artwork into the computer. I realize that we will have a lot of artwork over the years, and keeping it all just isn't feasible. It is also such a waste of space. This is his very first drawing using a 24-pack of crayola crayons on Whisper White cardstock. I actually kind of like this one a lot. I <i>was</i> going to use it to decorate a card, but decided against it and made Riley color again. I used a Stampin' Up! punch to cut out pieces of his artwork, and used them in my card. It turned out pretty cute. (You'll have to excuse the quality of the photo, as at the time I couldn't find my good camera, and so I used my scanner.) Quality aside, you get the idea. :) Happy Friday!</span></div>

Here is how it started:<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A little over a week ago I made some <a href="http://www.lottieanddoof.com/2009/03/maple-walnut-ice-cream/">maple walnut ice cream</a> for my father, who could not find it in stores anywhere and was craving it. It turned out to be a success. But not quite up to the perfect standards my dad had set for me. I blame this on using pure ingredients, as I'm sure the maple walnut ice cream of his past contained more than 5-ish ingredients. He did say it was good, just not <i>quite</i> right. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Well, I thought it was good. <i>Great</i> even. Probably some of the best ice cream I've had in a while. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It was the first time I used eggs/egg yolks when making ice cream...<span style="font-size: xx-small;">okay so go ahead and correct me, because technically "ice cream" contains no eggs, but frozen custard ice cream is just so gosh darn long, and let's face it, not as familiar...</span>and it wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So back to today...I realized I needed to use up the rest of the cream and what better way than to make another batch of ice cream. :) To decide on the flavor, I consulted with my husband. He stated he didn't really feel like ice cream tonight and ultimately was not very helpful. I had kind of thought about making a coconut or a coffee ice cream, and thought he would like neither of them. But he surprised me and said he would eat the coffee ice cream "if it was good." Even if he only has a little bit, it will be a little bit that I'm not consuming. ;) So coffee won out. Mocha to be precise. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And then I started Google-ing. There are conspiracies about the type of coffee you use, the type of chocolate or cocoa you use and whether or not to use eggs. (and there are also some dairy-free recipes out there!) It is such a difficult decision, because each blog you go to claims to have the <i>best</i> recipe. After looking at about 15 different websites I had Jamaal hand me the manual that came with our ice cream maker. And inside there was a very simple <i>Coffee Ice Cream</i> recipe, with a variation for <i>Mocha Chip Ice Cream</i>. That was it. I didn't have to print one out, I already had a recipe to carry into the kitchen. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And then I didn't read the directions quite right. I got excited and measured out all of the ingredients and put them in a mixing bowl. The recipe calls for:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>1 cup whole milk</li>
<li>3/4 cup sugar</li>
<li>2-3 tablespoons instant espresso or coffee, to taste</li>
<li>2 cups heavy cream</li>
<li>1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract</li>
</ul>
<div>
Variation:</div>
</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Use 1-1/2 tablespoons each instant espresso powder and Dutch process cocoa instead of just espresso powder</li>
<li>4 ounces bittersweet or semi-sweet chocolate bar, roughly chopped into tiny pieces (to be added in the last 5 minutes of churning)</li>
</ul>
<div>
You are <i>supposed</i> to use a mixer to combine the milk, granulated sugar and espresso powder (and cocoa) until dissolved, about 1-2 minutes on low speed. But I also added the heavy cream. Now, if you know heavy cream very well, you know that it can also be used for whipped cream. That means, you beat it, it fluffs up. So as I was mixing it was foaming, and the gosh darn cocoa and espresso wasn't dissolving! So I decided to warm it up a little to get it to dissolve. (and just so you know, I chose to use regular cocoa powder, because that was what was in my pantry, which, I read, is a little less chocolaty, and also doesn't dissolve as easily. While I'm on a roll confessing my <i>divergence</i> I also used 2 heaping tablespoons of <i>both</i> the cocoa and the espresso, none of this decreasing to 1-1/2 business. I want it to taste like a mocha dang it!)</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So, I poured the foamy mixture through a strainer into a saucepan and began heating my base. As I'm stirring constantly, I think: "If I have to stir this constantly anyway, I might as well add eggs to the mix." So I found a "premium ice cream" recipe in my Cuisinart booklet, the <i>Decadent Chocolate Ice Cream</i> recipe to be precise, and kind of made it work for me. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It calls for:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>2 large eggs</li>
<li>1 large egg yolk</li>
</ul>
<div>
And wouldn't you know it, I had exactly 3 eggs! The recipe wants you to combine sugar, cocoa, eggs and egg yolk in a medium bowl and beat it until it is thickened like mayonnaise. But I had already added all but the eggs to the hot milk/cream mixture, so I just beat the eggs as best I could. Then I took 1 cup of the hot milk/cream mixture and in a slow steady stream, beat it into the eggs using a hand mixer. (This is called <i>tempering </i>your eggs. If you just throw them into the warmed/hot milk they would cook like scrambled eggs. This kind of slowly brings them up to a warmer temperature so they don't cook that way, instead they combine with the other ingredients first, to form a <i>custard.)</i> Then I added my egg mixture to the saucepan, and continually stirred over low-medium heat. I had a candy thermometer attached and I kept stirring until it reached 170 degrees Fahrenheit (and it was thickening up.) </div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I had set up an ice bath prior, and poured the mixture through a strainer again into the bowl in my ice bath. This helped to cool the mixture quickly. That way I could quickly transfer the mixture into the fridge for the night. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I can't wait for tomorrow! :)</div>

Today I had a patient ask me: "If you would have known you would be doing <i>this</i> everyday, do you think you still would have become a nurse?"</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You see, today, I was in charge. And this patient had called, the unit secretary answered her call, and attempted to contact the assistant and the covering nurse (the patient's nurse was on lunch) and no one was available. The pt stated she had to go to the bathroom, "really badly." </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To be honest...<i>I sighed</i>. Even now, as I typed this paragraph I sighed. Taking people to the bathroom truly is not my favorite thing to do. I would not have become a nurse if that was all I were to do. I have experienced a multitude of different scenarios while taking people to the bathroom during my <i>five</i> years of being a nurse. Many of which are positive experiences during which "please," "thank you," and stories are shared. But of course there are always several negative experiences that seem to overshadow all of the good ones. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The fact of the matter is that some people handle the sick role better than others. Some people weren't given, either by nature or nurture, the appropriate coping mechanisms to handle an illness. We nurses call this "poor coping skills." Some truly cannot help it at this time in their life due to some altered mental status, and in those situations I find the most difficulty. I have to constantly breathe into the task at hand, and repeat to myself "they are sick, they are scared, they don't know who you are." Because I have to believe if they <i>did</i> know, they would apologize for their actions, and a part of them would be embarrassed. Until that time, I try not to let their harsh words and actions get to me. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Let me tell you, though, I will only lay still and take abuse for so long!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Anyway, back to my sigh. I walked into that patient's room, and there she sat, with her feet dangling off the bed and a huge pool of excrement on her sheets. She said, she was sorry for anyone who had to come in to help her. She had a slight Irish accent, and flashed a smile at me after I made a joke about probably not needing any more bowel meds. (She had been given quite a lot, because she was really constipated after having 2 separate surgeries about a week apart.) I usually can predict how a situation will end up if people get a kick out of my humor. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I called for someone to come in and help me and together we got the bed and the patient all cleaned up in no time. While she was sitting on the commode chair, as I was changing her sheets, she asked me the above question: would I have still become a nurse if I knew I would be cleaning up poo everyday?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And I answered her honestly: I don't clean it up <i>everyday</i>. Several times a week maybe (back when I was full time), but most of the time people make it to the toilet. :) She said she had a lot of respect for what nurses did, and stated there would <i>be no doctors without nurses</i>. And I agreed. So I told her, that when it is someone like her, who is kind, respectful, and has a good sense of humor it is easy for me to do my job. I don't mind it. It doesn't even really gross me out. People like her are the reason I return to work. And when all of the negative encounters begin outweighing the good ones, I will find some other nursing job to latch onto. Because that is one perk of nursing, there are a multitude of other jobs I could do. But for now, I'm okay where I'm at.</div>

<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">My son is really going
through a period of being difficult. I've mentioned this <a href="http://toward-the-horizon.blogspot.com/2012/08/tears-come-in-twos.html">before</a>.
And well today is just no different. I started the day rough on him, and it has
continued off an on through this morning. He is currently singing to himself in
his crib...but it is time for "night nights" so there he will stay.
It really all started when I didn't give him his milk. You see, we were going
to a Weight Watchers meeting with my mom and I thought he would stay quiet for
longer if he were to drink his milk at the meeting instead of in the car on the
way there. My mistake was that he saw me pour his milk...and when I put his cup
in the bag instead of in his hands, his whole world fell apart. I tried
distracting him, and giving him other tasks, but it didn't work. So after
snapping him in his car seat, he got his cup. Poor kid. Mama is so mean. ;)
Then at the scale, I told him to stay with me, and he wasn't happy about that
either. My mom got there after we did, so I had no one to hold, or watch him
while I was weighing in. He got upset then too. Stickers from the leader didn't
help. He just cried some more. But I was able to set him down so I could weigh
in. And he was fine once I picked him up again. I could go on and on about this
right now, so I will just move on to #2, which really is just a continuation of
#1. ;)</span><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="font-size: 130%; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=7576289851003404827" name="qt2"></a><strong>--- 2 ---</strong></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">He has been screaming a
lot lately. And there seems to be nothing we can do to make him stop. I have
tried whispering, ignoring, removal, and while the last one has worked to
settle him down, I usually cannot return him to the same environment. For
example, this morning my mom and I went out to breakfast, and after he felt he
was done he started screaming at the top of his lungs. So I took him into the
bathroom. At this age, there really is nothing to talk about, other than saying
"Mommy said no screaming." Later on in life, we might have more
productive bathroom trips in which conversations are had about what behavior is
allowed in a restaurant. But for now we simply washed our hands. Upon returning
to the table I attempted to put him back in his seat, and he started writhing
and saying "No, No, No..." So I made a compromise and placed him in
my lap. He was well behaved there and ate a bit more food. But goodness do I
wish he didn't scream...crying is so much better. </span><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"><br /></span></div>

<br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">I find my motivation to
clean, tidy and organize dwindles by the time Riley is put down for his nap. I
really want to do these things before I get out of bed in the morning, but he
wears me down to the point that all I want to do is rest and eat some food. ;)
Today I decided to try blogging and see if I can feel some ease of mind.
Because I really do want to purge some items. I feel so cluttered and messy and
wish getting rid of things was easy for me. </span><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">

<br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">I saw a pin on Pinterest
the other day about making your own foaming hand soap. (and wouldn't you know I
didn't repin in?!) But, I have always wondered what would happen if you put
soap in a foaming soap dispenser, so I thought I would try it today. My
Peach Bellini Bath and Body Works hand soap was pretty close to empty
today, so I added some Johnson & Johnson Baby Wash to it, followed by
some tap water, and carefully tilted the container until it was mixed. And
poof! Foaming hand soap! Yippee! (I ended up searching on Pinterest for the
idea and found <a href="http://thefrugalgirls.com/2010/05/how-to-make-homemade-foaming-soap.html">this
site</a> if you need further instructions. It wasn't <i>the </i>pin
I had seen, but it will do just fine. :) And can I just add that Pinterest is
acting out a lot this morning! Goodness, will people please stop loving it as
much as I do, so they stop hogging all the server space? Thanks in advance!</span><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"><br /></span></div>

<br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">And I just had a total
"Duh!" moment. I absolutely love to have foaming dish soap around so
I can wash small dishes with a brush without making a sudsy sink...so I just
bought a new bottle of the <a href="http://thefrugalgirls.com/2011/03/how-to-make-foaming-dish-soap.html">Dawn
foaming dish soap</a>, when I could totally be making my own! Seriously folks,
what did I do without Pinterest? I mean...don't go there. It is just a waste of
time... ;)</span><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">Yesterday was our Garbage
day, and I was confused because they picked up our recycling, but not our
garbage. So this morning I called to find out what was amok. Turns out, I
didn't pay our bill. And they were scheduled to come pick up our cans soon.
Oopsies. They didn't even leave a note or call to find out where our payment
was. They were just going to take our cans and say adios. I paid my bill over
the phone and asked if they send bills via email, since that usually is how I get
my bills and signed up that way. I have also decided I need to create a chart
for me to check off the bills each month as I pay them, because that is the
second one I forgot to pay this month...(actually the garbage bill was from
June! and they never sent me a second notice. How strange!) You would think I
was pregnant or something...</span><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"><br /></span></div>

<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">I
have been really feeling like I want to have a lot more kids than just the two
my husband has planned for us. I guess I'll just have to re-address the issue
after having number 2 (if we are able). Because perhaps I will change my own
mind. Especially after mornings like today (see #'s 1-3 above). Also, we don't
really have a lot of room for kidlets in this house. We could do some
rearranging. (For example I would love to move my craft room into the den area,
and put the computer either in the living room or in our bedroom. That would
open up one more bedroom. So that the girls could have their own room and the
boys could share one too. But I'm likely living in a dream world. I don't think
my husband would let me take over the den. Would you babe?! :) Anyway, I've
come to the conclusion that a pregnancy of multiples might satisfy my urge for
more children, and abide by my husband's strict policy of two periods of
infancy. So I've been willing for multiple eggs to drop. Go ahead and call me
crazy. :)</span><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-align: justify;">

<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">And
because I prefer even numbers to odd numbers I thought I would share one more
tid-bit today. Since working at Weight Watchers, I find myself going to Trader
Joe's a lot more. (They are in the same parking lot in Federal Way, so it is
super convenient to go there for me). This last time I went I found Mochi Ice
Cream and I was reminded of my dear friend Kristina. Here is a website review
of them, but you really shouldn't read the review, because I don't agree.
However, there are some good pictures of the ice cream balls and that you are
allowed to look at. I thought they were quite tasty. They are ice cream balls
with a mochi layer on the outside. Reminds me of our trip to TCBY. :) BUT they
are 3 Points Plus each...so they are a bit high when it comes down to calories.
I think I'm going to break away and have one now. :) Happy Friday!</span><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

There are a couple reasons for this, first, my son is almost 2, and I'm starting to feel a little itchy for a baby. And to be honest, I think he is too. At my cousin's house (who has 3 little girls) he loved pushing around a doll stroller with his Tigger in it. He is so very helpful (most of the time) and will assist with many chores. He throws things away for me, puts his toys away, and will push the right buttons on the dishwasher or washer/dryer when asked to. He also feeds the girls for us. We just have to fill the cup up with the amount we want them to have. He will pour the cup out into the bowl regardless of how much is in it. (And when he misses a couple pieces of dog food, he will sit there and pick each one up and put it in that dog's bowl. It is something he doesn't need to do, because they will eat it, but he is a slight neat freak.) :)<br />
<br />
The second reason, is one that is a little bit more detailed. And for that reason I'm going to put it behind a "jump break." That way, it is your own fault if you accidentally read something you don't want to. It isn't too graphic, but it is a bit detailed and personal, so some people might not want to read about it. Hint: it involves my reproductive organs.<br />
<br />
Read on...<br />
<a name='more'></a>About a week ago, my husband and I had sex and it was painful for me. This was not normal for me. (Nor should it be for any lady). The following next two days I had the worst abdominal pain and cramping in my life. It was constant, sharp, sometimes stabbing, pain. It felt almost as if I had a really awful bladder infection. On Friday the pain was so bad it was hard for me to sit upright. I could barely walk without grimacing. I seriously considered going into the ER. I was concerned about possibly having a ectopic pregnancy (where the embryo embeds somewhere else other than the uterus usually in the fallopian tubes, but it really could be anywhere). I was also a little worried that my IUD (intrauterine device) had punctured my uterus. You know how it is, things like this happen after 5pm on Friday, so you can't just call your MD to get in and be seen. So I waited a few days and finally was able to get an appointment today. The pain I was having passed just as quickly as it came. But after I made my appointment, you know who came to visit? That pesky Aunt Flo.<br />
<br />
I am pretty sure that the cramping and pain was related to the monthly visitor, and it was just a lot worse with the IUD in there. I mean, a cramping uterus squeezing some plastic device equals some pain and discomfort.<br />

This is my very first period since 2010 when I got pregnant....I'm really not looking forward to more in the future. I told my doctor that, and she said "Well, just get pregnant really quick then." :) (Though this one is really quite light compared to what used to be normal for me.)<br />

Now, I have to get my nose back into my fertility books and pay attention to my body. I bought a planner today to help me track, that is what I used before and it helped me a lot. And I just paid for an app that allows me to track my temperature and other symptoms as well. (And it helps to determine ovulation.) It cost me $5, which is definitely worth it, whereas a lot of the other apps make you pay $2.50 per month. :)<br />
